Background

Recording context (from the label catalog, livelife.li): the album is a live concert recorded at Jazzclub Moods in Zürich (the club later relocated to the Schiffbau). It documents the working quintet "Michael Gassmann «Fearless Five»." Personnel: Michael Gassmann (trumpet), Eric Hunziker (guitar), Gregor Müller (piano), Herbert Kramis (double bass), Andy Brugger (drums). The same band continued to perform live after the recording — e.g. Moods/Schiffbau Zürich (March 2009), Mehrspur Club Zürich (18 Dec 2009), and the 21st Schaffhausen Jazz Festival at Kulturzentrum Kammgarn (8 May 2010). Three tracks are streamable on Mx3.ch (titles include "chez é" and "La fille qui sommeille") and three "live in Zurich" clips exist on YouTube. Artist background (Fonoteca/Swiss National Sound Archives, arttv.ch): Gassmann, born 28 July 1964 in Regensdorf, is self-taught (no formal jazz schooling), active since the mid-1980s, mentored early on by Enrico Rava, with long associations with Italian musicians Claudio Fasoli, Stefano Battaglia and Roberto Bonati; his main earlier projects were the Michael Gassmann Quartet, the Gassmann/Battaglia Duo and Musica Reservata. Drummer Andy Brugger is a recurring collaborator (also Brugger's "No No Diet Bang").
