Reception

Azurka (Abeat ABJZ 022, 2003) is a retrospective of the long collaboration between saxophonist/composer Claudio Fasoli and arranger-conductor Riccardo Brazzale with his Lydian Sound Orchestra. CONTEXT: a compilation drawn from four sessions across 1986-2003, not a single date; all music by Fasoli (Pipe co-written by Brazzale), arranged/conducted by Brazzale; Abeat ABJZ 022, distributed by IRD. Michael Gassmann plays trumpet/flugelhorn only on the 8 January 2000 Tala Studio, Milano session, alongside Mauro Negri, Moreno Castagna, Rudi Migliardi and Alberto Tacchini; Kyle Gregory and Paolo Birro feature on the 10 January 2003 Vicenza live tracks; Marco Tamburini on a 1995 track. The orchestra was founded by Brazzale c.1989 near Vicenza. RECEPTION: essentially confined to Italian jazz press and label/orchestra notes. The one substantive review located, by Francesco Peluso for MMS (carried on Jazzitalia, 2005), is strongly positive: it reads the album not as commemorative but as a wide reflection on the two artists' shared path, praising Brazzale's arranging and the mix of contrapuntal-harmonic complexity with Davis, Coltrane and Shorter references in asymmetric forms, calling it the best of their orchestral output; the Abeat label and the orchestra's site echo this, noting colorful orchestration, Davis/Coltrane quotations, Evans-like sonorities, Shorter modal playing and a 19th-century pipe organ.
