Reception

No dedicated critical review of "Gesti" itself surfaced in English, Italian, or German jazz press. The album is one of three large-ensemble Theatrum recordings Stefano Battaglia cut in a single June 1997 session for Splasc(H); the trio of titles (Gesti, Originaria, Mut(e)azioni I-XV, with Rito Stagionale also in the orbit) is consistently mentioned together as a body of work rather than reviewed individually. Standard reference sources (Wikipedia, AllMusic artist/album listings) catalog the Theatrum releases but carry no editorial review text for Gesti. AllMusic, All About Jazz, RateYourMusic, and Discogs all returned 403/bot-blocks when fetched directly, so any review prose they might hold could not be confirmed; AllMusic does host pages for the companion Theatrum albums but these too appeared to lack substantive review copy. The honest finding for this small-label date is near-absence of contemporaneous criticism specific to this title.

Background

Recording/concept context is well documented even where reviews are not. "Gesti" (Italian for "gestures") is a six-movement work (Gesti I-VI, roughly 34-35 min) recorded 16-21 June 1997 at Spazi Sonori Studio in Livorno, Italy, and released on Splasc(H) Records (CDH 901.2) in 1998 (a digital reissue appeared 2015). It is credited to Stefano Battaglia Theatrum, the large ensemble (around 16 players: piano/percussion led by Battaglia, multiple saxophones and clarinets, brass including Michael Gassmann on trumpet, three basses, and percussion) that Battaglia drew from his Laboratorio Permanente di Ricerca Musicale, the Permanent Workshop for Musical Research he has run in Siena since 1996. The workshop's stated method is central to the music's concept: scores function as vehicles for free improvisation through "semantic-structural" paths, deliberately avoiding traditional notation in favor of narrative-morphological indications, so the Theatrum recordings sit at the meeting point of composition, conceptual scoring, and large-group improvisation. Gesti thus belongs to a focused cluster of conceptual large-ensemble works Battaglia produced in 1997.
