Critical reception is centered on the Italian jazz press, where the album was received warmly. The principal substantive review is by Sandro Cerini in Musica Jazz: he frames "Haiku Time" around its haiku-derived aesthetic of brevity and compression, notes that Fasoli foregrounds thematic writing and layered group interplay over individual soloing, and praises the quintet's brilliance and the music's "incredible richness" of color and dynamics while remaining communicative despite its formal sophistication; Cerini calls Fasoli a maverick Italian music should be proud of. Background

Recorded by the Claudio Fasoli Samadhi Quintet and released 2017 on Abeat Records (cat. AB JZ 178 / SKU ABJZ178). Personnel: Claudio Fasoli (soprano and tenor saxophone, leader), Michael Gassmann (trumpet and flugelhorn), Michelangelo Decorato (piano), Andrea Lamacchia (double bass), Marco Zanoli (drums). The "Samadhi" quintet is the trumpet-augmented expansion of the modular "double quartet" Fasoli used on his earlier album "Inner Sounds." Conceptually the album takes the Japanese haiku as its organizing metaphor: compositions, the terse three-letter track titles (FIT, DIM, FAR, WET, LOW, BAG, SHE, TRY, BOW), and several improvisations are deliberately compressed and essential, with the quintet decomposing into smaller ensembles and making use of silence. A companion score book exists (referenced on claudiofasoli.com). No recording studio, date, or producer credit was found on the label or artist pages.
